Star Trek Minimates Wave 1 Variant - Dress McCoy

Here we have the variant of wave 1, Dr. McCoy in his dress uniform. This review focuses on just the variant as Scotty has been reviewed elsewhere.

Packaging

DST have opted for a blister card for the Star-Trek packaging. The card itself has a space graphic which goes from dark red at the edges to an orange white at the centre - which helps the figures stand out from the packaging. At the top of the blister there's a red card insert with the legend ‘Star Trek: Celebrating 40 Years’ with the Minimates logo below. The insert is windowed so both figures are clearly visible, though some accessories are obscured. There's a Starfleet logo to the left of the insert with the legend 'series 1' across it. The names of the characters in the pack are on a sticker which has been applied to the outside of the blister in a similar style to the old Marvel blister packs.

On the back is the usual array of company logos. The Starfleet insignia from the front of the box has been repeated in the upper left of the card, a nice image of the USS Enterprise NCC 1701 is in the upper right.

All of the minimates in the wave are pictured on the back, it's a shame they've not gone for the large group shot as seen on the new Marvel packs. Though at least the pictures of the 'mates aren't as small as on the backs of the DCD and BSG cards.

The Figure

Dr. McCoy in Dress Uniform

It’s Dr McCoy, in his party duds.

McCoy’s face is exactly the same as the regular release.

The body is also very similar same parts as Dr McCoy, just different decoration to the shirt. It’s hard to work up any enthusiasm for this Minimate. It just seems so pointless. The Starfleet badge on the breast has been replaced with a cross emblem. I’m not sure what it’s supposed to represent but I’m guessing it’s meant to show that the wearer is medical staff? There’s a line that runs up the centre of the chest, I assume that the line is supposed to be where two sides of a jacket join. Body detailing is at a minimum, in fact there’s probably less detailing to this variant than there is on the regular figure. The gold decoration around the cuffs has disappeared and there’s less definition on the torso. Another minor difference is that the ‘collar’ is a round neck rather than the V-neck of the normal uniform shirt, although the collar is now also picked out in gold.

McCoy’s only accessory is a tri-corder, I imagine DST decided he didn’t need a phaser (which the original figure had) at a formal occasion. Don’t they realise all those alien ambassadors are going to be packing heat? It is a bit of a let down that the variant figure comes with less accessories than the regular release because fans do pay a premium for these figures. McCoy has the usual C3 feet and peg hole in the head.

In conclusion, although I’m a fan of the regular Dr McCoy I find this variant pointless. There’s nothing about this figure that makes him stand out from the wave. Why DST... WHY?
