Star Trek Minimates - The Gorn

Here we have a Minimate version of the Gorn, the fierce reptilian creature Captain Kirk faced-off against in the classic Trek episode "Arena".

Packaging

Two different types of packaging were used in the Star Trek Minimates line. Some figures were carded, and some came in the round plastic tube packaging. The Gorn here is on a card.

The Gorn

The Gorn is suitably alien looking, although the expression isn't quite as fierce as it should be. The round eyes and the almost-smiling fanged mouth make it seem cute rather than scary, although I guess that's par for the course when creating a Minimate version of anything. There are some nice horn details on the back of the head.

The Gorn has a very lurid yellow costume, with orange detailing. Along with his green skin, it means you can't miss him, although not in a good way! The paint apps are OK, nothing special, and the yellow is applied quite thinly on his body. He has clawed hands, and a skirt piece which restricts most of the leg movement.

The main problem with this figure is that the torso peg is far shorter than other 3" Minimates, and that, combined with the skirt piece, means that he falls apart at the middle very easily.

The Gorn comes with two accessories. He has what looks like a piece of a phaser, and a small black stick. I assume these are taken from the episode. Still, with a lot of the 3" Minimates not getting anything, these are still quite nice to have.

Overall, I don't think the Gorn works quite as well as the Mugatu as a "bad guy" Minimate. He is not as visually interesting and the shorter torso peg makes for frustrating play value.

MMC Score - 5 out of 10
