Star Trek Minimates Wave 3 - Space Seed Khan and Dress Uniform Kirk

Diamond Select Toys return to the Star Trek well for more Minimates, now shrunk to 2" and packed 2 figures to a set instead of their original 3" wave. We are now up to wave three, which is very much a Kirk and Spock-fest.

Packaging

Very much the same as before only this time the card colour is a nasty Greeny/Yellow/Mustardy type of shade. It really does look unpleasant, but I guess it stands out on the pegs. The figures are held in with twist-ties. easily viewable through the card blister.

The back of the card features portraits of all the figures in the wave, and the usual legal blurb and trademark indicia.

The Figures

Space Seed Khan

Ooh look it's a Trek Minimate in wave 3 that isn't Kirk, Spock, or Sarek. Hurrah!

This is Khan Noonian Singh (as portrayed by Ricardo Montalban) in the classic Trek story 'Space Seed'. Khan leads a group of enhanced humans who were exiled from earth after the Eugenics Wars. Naturally once they're aboard the Enterprise they try to take over the ship.

This isn't a bad crack at a Khan Minimate, the skin tone is very good and the likeness while inexact is as good as it's probably going to get. Ricardo Montalban's features don't really translate well to that little plastic cylinder. The expression is slightly off, looking stern where Khan is haughty but all in all it's not a bad looking 'mate. Khan's hairpiece is faithful to the character as it's attempts to portray longish hair pulled into a knot at the back.

The outfit is not all that spectacular, but then it's modelled on what's supposed to be a prison overall. Decoration to the chest block is very well detailed, check out the collar and the buttons down the front, both are quite intricate for this scale. Khan's only other decoration is a belt. There is no other detailing to the arms or legs. Like the other 'mates in this wave he does have very shiny feet but unlike most of the 'mates in this wave that's not the best thing about him.

Khan is accessorised with a phaser pistol.

In conclusion: Nicely done, and a welcome addition to a line that's becoming clogged with minor variations of the main characters.

Dress Uniform Kirk

3 waves of Star Trek Minimates and we're already up to Kirk number 4. It's not funny!

This is Kirk in his dress uniform. It's a green top with some gold decoration and more hints of Shatner moobage. The decoration is crisp and clear, but there's not a lot of it. It's yet another dull Minimate in what is possibly the dullest wave of Minimates I've ever had to review. I'd rather review my foot than carry on writing this. Kirk's expression is slightly different to the other three Kirks. Again it's not too bad a likeness, I'm just bored of writing about him.

[Editors Note:- Normally I'd take Rad out and thrash him for not being fully committed to the reviewing cause but sometimes character fatigue does set in. I've had this before myself when we had a run of Wolverine Minimates - there seemed to be loads of the damn things at once and they do get a bit samey when trying to write about them.]

Dress uniform Kirk is accessorised with a phaser pistol and has very shiny shoes.

In Conclusion: zzzzzzzzzzzzz
