Star Trek Minimates - Captain Kirk
The first Star Trek review on Minimates Central could be no-one but the most iconic character in Trek history - James T. Kirk himself.
Packaging
Two different types of packaging were used in the Star Trek Minimates line. Some figures were carded, and some came in the round plastic tube packaging. The Captain Kirk shown here comes on a card. I will review both kinds of packaging in the future.
The back of the box shows the other characters in the Star Trek range.
Overall, the card is colourful and evokes the brightness of the 60s show quite well.
Captain Kirk

With Minimates, there isn't a lot of sculpted detail, that's a given. Therefore, when creating your little 3" block figures, it's crucial to get the faces right. This face is certainly done right, capturing Kirk's dashing roguishness with a few simple lines. Like the other 3" Minimates, the hairpiece is pegged on, something that would be incorporated into the 2" range later on.
Captain Kirk doesn't have much detailing on him, but then, the classic TOS outfit never was much for intricate patterns or layered colours, those came later in Trek history. Regardless, what's there, like the Starfleet insignia, has been done well. The overall look is rather plain, but it matches with the source material.
Apart from the puzzle piece, which I never regard as a true accessory, Kirk is tooled up with a phaser. The phaser looks good, being suitably chunky and silver, but it would have been nice to get a communicator too, for those essential "Kirk to Enterprise" moments.
Overall, it's a classic Captain Kirk figure which has been implemented well in Minimate form.
MMC Score - 7 out of 10
