Star Trek Minimates Wave 3 - Gladiator Kirk and Kor

Diamond Select Toys return to the Star Trek well for more Minimates, now shrunk to 2" and packed 2 figures to a set instead of their original 3" wave. We are now up to wave three, which is very much a Kirk and Spock-fest.

Packaging

Very much the same as before only this time the card colour is a nasty Greeny/Yellow/Mustardy type of shade. It really does look unpleasant, but I guess it stands out on the pegs. The figures are held in with twist-ties. easily viewable through the card blister.

The back of the card features portraits of all the figures in the wave, and the usual legal blurb and trademark indicia.

The Figures

Gladiator Kirk

Three waves, four Shats. Shats and Spock are the Wolverine and Spider-Man of the Star Trek Minimate universe.

This is Kirk as seen in the Original Series episode Blood and Circuses. The command crew of the Enterprise are captured by a planetary society modelled on the Roman Empire and forced to fight in the arena.

Another not-bad likeness for Kirk and it's good that they've not simply re-used the print from Wave One Kirk. The hairpiece looks the same (I'm guessing Shats only had the one at the time) but the mouth and eyes are markedly different. This Kirk has a determined look about him.

Any points gained by the redone facial expression are immediately lost when you examine the rest of the figure. The body is straight from dullsville. What can you be expected to be excited about? It's an all grey outfit with a little bit of detail at the collar and a slight hint of Shat's moobs. Still, the shoes are nice and shiny!

Gladiator Kirk is accessorised with a Phaser pistol and Communicator.

In conclusion: Next! The face is nicely done but calling the rest of the figure "humdrum" would be a massive understatement.

Kor

Now this is more like it. Three waves in, and we finally get one of the iconic classic Trek villains.

Originally a Commander of a Klingon invasion force, Kor was also used as a character in the Star Trek cartoon series and later returned in Deep Space Nine.

The likeness to Kor is excellent. It's always easier to capture exaggerated features in Minimate form and the classic Klingon's heavy eyebrows and facial hair are well represented.

The body is made up of a silver chestpiece that has some simple black lines running horizontally across the centre and a small amount of black detailing around the neck. There's no belt piece on this mate, but there is a small amount of gold detail at the top of the T-piece. Other than that it's a fairly plain 'mate, though garnished with a Klingon ceremonial sash that sits over the chest block. My one criticism of this ‘mate is that the sash tends to force Kor’s arm out at an odd angle. That’s my one criticism. Hardly ruins the ‘mate though.

Kor is accessorised with a Klingon Disruptor pistol. It’s faithful to its on-screen counterpart, though obviously 'mateyfied'.

In Conclusion: At last... VARIETY!
