Star Trek "Mirror, Mirror" Boxset
The Star Trek Minimates roll on, with an all-new boxset taken from the fan-favourite episode "Mirror, Mirror". The boxset contains 5 Minimates, with new versions of Kirk, Spock, Sulu and Uhura as well as Marlena Moreau.
Packaging
A slight departure from the usual blister pack. The backing card is rounded at the top left and bottom right and the blister itself is rounded at the bottom right. The card itself features the classic Star Trek logo set against a picture of the Enterprise. All of the figures and accessories are clearly visible within the blister, and interestingly the 4 figures on the outside all tilt towards the centre. There is a small die cut inlay card in the bottom left of the blister. All in all a very nice looking pack.
The back of the card features a group photo of all the Minimates along with smaller pictures of the characters available in series 4 and 5 of the Star Trek Minimates line. Nice cross-sell.
The Figures
"Mirror, Mirror" Kirk

Be he the Captain of the ISS Enterprise, or the Captain of the USS Enterprise posing as his double, it's just nice to have a legitimate Kirk variant.
Kirk looks to have the same head and hairpiece as Wave One Kirk. At least the expression on the face is so similar that it just has to be a re-use.
The body is where the fun starts. In the mirror universe there's a Terran Empire instead of a Federation of Planets. For some reason the uniform of an Empire Starship Captain Is a gold-ish waistcoat worn with nothing else underneath. The waistcoat looks fine on the 'mate, but there's a lot of texture missing when compared to screencaps of the episode. It looks as if this was probably a necessary sacrifice as the various insignia and medals that mirror Kirk wears would probably have become lost against any texture apps.
There's also a golden sash worn around the waist which appears to be standard issue on the ISS Enterprise. It's a shame that the sash is a different colour to the waistcoat as looking again at screen caps ita ppears to have been made from the same material. There's a small peg on the opposite side of the trailing sash which a ceremonial dagger attaches to. The rest of the 'mate is the standard TOS black legs and feet but without the little ankle block.
Mirror Kirk is accessorised with a ceremonial dagger and a phaser pistol.
In Conclusion: Finally a legitimate Kirk variant.

"Mirror, Mirror" Spock

Forget Darth Vader, Spock with a goatee really is the ultimate bad guy. Executive Officer on the ISS Enterprise, he's just one assassination away from becoming Captain.
This is the first Spock variant I really like. I'm fairly certain that the hair is the standard Spock hairpiece, and it's just possible I may finally be getting used to it. The face is absolutely spot on. From the top of its narrowed eyebrows to the tip of its impeccable goatee. Great job DST.
The uniform shirt is well done, but it's only a slight variation on the basic blue we've seen before. However it is decorated with a larger insignia and a few medals. Mirror Spock's golden sash is worn on his left hip and this is representative of how the character appeared in the episode.
Like Mirror Kirk, Mirror Spock has standard black legs and feet. It's noticeable that neither have the little anklet pieces that other TOS 'mates have worn.
Spock is accessorised with a phaser pistol and a dagger. Et Tu Spocko?
In Conclusion: a fine looking representation of Mirror Spock.

Marlena Moreau

Lieutenant Marlena Moreau considers herself the Captain's woman, and soon realises there's something wrong with Kirk when he refuses to murder Mirror Spock. Desperate to get her Kirk back she agrees to help return the dimensional castaways to their own universe.
It can't be easy to make a Minimate version of one of the loveliest women ever to grace the original series. Barbara Luna was smoking hot in her day, and I have to say the guys at DST have really done her justice with this Minimate.
The hair is an excellent attempt at a 1960's beehive hairstyle. It sits brilliantly and flares across the shoulders nicely too. Facially it's as close a match to the character as you can get on a Minimate. This is one of the nicest female Minimate faces I've seen in quite a while. It really is an excellent piece.
The mirror universe uniforms are a bit of a departure from the regular Starfleet designs and this is more than evident in the female officers uniform. As if the micro skirt and knee high boots of the regular uniform wasn't enough, the mirror uniform also includes a belly revealing vest top. I'm not complaining! Once again someone at DST has had tons of fun designing this 'mate. Marlena is more curvy than a 2 inch block figure has any right to be. She's also absolutely stacked! I'm not sure the actress who played Marlena was that busty, but again, I'm not complaining. The actual tampo on the chest block is very simple but very very effective, the blue of the uniform stands out nicely (possibly helped by those curves) although the gold insignia on the right breast is not all that easy to see.
The skirt is a new piece which incorporates the sash that all the crew wear in the mirror universe. It also rises a little higher in the front for that extra-scandalous look. Talking of looks; I did, she has, they're blue. Marlene's finished off with regulation knee high boots, and is accessorised with a dagger which is worn on her right hip.
In Conclusion: Excellent translation of the character into 'mate form.

"Mirror, Mirror" Sulu

Mirror Sulu was Security Officer aboard the ISS Enterprise, and lead a coup to seize control of the ship.
A good representation of Mirror Sulu, his trademark scar down the right side of his face is present and correct and Sulu appears to have a slightly sardonic expression.
Sulu's costume is pretty dull, but still well done. It's just a very dark (blood?) red, with Imperial insignia in gold and a little bit of definition to the chest and abdominal area. Don't get me wrong, it's a great looking Minimate and different enough from the other Sulu not to get lost on a shelf display but there's not really enough to make him stand out either.
Sulu's uniform is completed with a gold sash and standard black legs and feet. Unlike Kirk and Spock, this Minimate does get the ankle pieces. He's accessorised with a dagger that clips to a peg on the sash.
In Conclusion: Not a stinker by any means but probably the weakest Minimate in the set.

"Mirror, Mirror" Uhura

As with Kirk, this is the actual Lt. Uhura posing as her mirror universe counterpart while she is trapped in that dimension.
The head and hairpieces are exactly the same as wave two Uhura. Fair enough on the hair, but to use the same face is a bit poor as it would have been nice to have had a different expression on this version of Uhura. That said they have changed the earrings to gold, and Uhura's lipstick is red instead of pink. This Uhura does seem to have a lighter skintone too.
Uhura wears a similar skimpy uniform to Marlena Moreau but obviously in red instead of blue. The gold Terran Empire logo stands out much better against the red. There's even a fine gold line edging to the black of the collar which I didn't notice at all on Marlena. Interestingly the collar line goes all the way around the Minimates' neck post, something we don't often see in any Minimate line.
Uhura's skirt is the same piece as Marlena's. It's worth noting here, that as with Marlena there's a small section of flesh colour just above the sash. Another way of showing just how revealing the Terran Empire uniforms are. Not all that practical, but who's complaining? B y the way Danny, yes she is; They're red.
Uhura's accessorised with a dagger that attaches to a peg on her right hip, and a Padd.
In Conclusion: Another worthy variant. Both of the female characters in this set appear to have had a lot of attention lavished upon them. Funny that!

Overall Thoughts
This set is probably the strongest Star Trek Minimate product we've had so far. There's a real sense of fun to it, and even though four of the characters have been available before (ad nauseum in the case of Kirk and Spock) there's enough difference there to appreciate. If I was giving the set a score it'd be at least a 9.5.
