Star Trek Minimates - The Mugatu
Here we have a villain Minimate for the Enterprise crew to fight, the Mugatu, from the episode "A Private Little War".
Packaging
Two different types of packaging were used in the Star Trek Minimates line. Some figures were carded, and some came in the round plastic tube packaging. The Mugatu I am reviewing came in a tube. However, I've, er, lost it. So no pics of the packaging I'm afraid. I think it's been packed away in storage with some of my other Minimates items like the C3 sets and the Iron Maiden Eddie Minimate, so hopefully if I dig it out someday I can update the review.
I did notice that on the back of the carded Trek figures, the Mugatu is incorrectly called "The Mugato".
The Mugatu

With most of the 2002 Minimates licenses being of humans, the ape-like Mugatu certainly stands out. There is a lot of detailing on this figure, even the face is much busier than the more stoic looks seen in the Crouching Tiger line, for example. The eyes are black pools, and the mouth is vivid red. The horn piece is actually quite similar to how Art Asylum would do the Rhino Marvel Minimate a year later, being almost a helmet that goes on over the head but leaving the face exposed. The horn gives him added stature and menace, making the Mugato tower over the other Star Trek Minimates. The furry sculpting is done nicely.
Although the figure is predominantly white all over, there are some unique extra pieces to better convey the alien nature of this beast. The torso gets a cool piece that gives the front and shoulders a shaggy pelt (and restricts some of the arm movement), whilst also having the spiny, clubbed tail hanging off the back. It works very well in bulking up the figure. The Mugatu also has brown claws instead of hands and some ankle pieces which again add the appearance of fur.
The Mugatu does not come with any accessories, apart from the puzzle piece, which I never regard as a true accessory.
Overall, it's an adequate villain to fight your Star Trek Minimates (or any others come to think of it). Not a terribly glamorous adversary but quite nicely executed.
