Star Trek Minimates Wave 3 Variant - Spock's Brain

Diamond Select Toys return to the Star Trek well for more Minimates, now shrunk to 2" and packed 2 figures to a set instead of their original 3" wave. We are now up to wave three, which is very much a Kirk and Spock-fest. In keeping with the theme wave 3's variant is another Spock, cos, well, there obviously wasn't enough of him in this wave or the previous ones. As Sarek has been reviewed previously, this review focuses soley on the variant.

Packaging

Very much the same as before only this time the card colour is a nasty Greeny/Yellow/Mustardy type of shade. It really does look unpleasant, but I guess it stands out on the pegs. The figures are held in with twist-ties. easily viewable through the card blister. Spock's Brain is clearly identified as the variant.

The back of the card features portraits of all the figures in the wave, and the usual legal blurb and trademark indicia.

The Figure

Spock's Brain

Spock Spock Spock Spock. Spock Spock Spockity Spock! I'm so bored writing about Kirk and Spock!

Spock's brain got stolen. I know the feeling! So Spock's body ends up with a lump of metal on his head that receives signals via a remote control thingy.

Same Spock face, same Spock hairpiece, but wait... No, it's something... New! Can this truly be? A new hairpiece for a Spock, well yes, because integral to it is the metal thingy that controls Spock's body. It's silver, and round, and there are yellow highlights above the temple which I'm assuming are supposed to be status lamps? Did I mention it's silver?

However, don't get too excited. The rest of this figure brings us back to dullsville with a thump. The body's pretty much all green with a few fold marks on the chest piece and an exciting black section just below the neck.

Spock's Brain Variant Spock is accessorised with the remote control thingy from the story and what looks to be a Vulcan musical instrument. At least that's something new!

In conclusion: So many brilliant Trek characters, so many worthy variations of the main crew characters... They give us this!

MMC Score - 4 out of 10

Final Thoughts

Khan and Kor are the only real reasons to buy this wave. It's a huge let down and a bit of a smack in the face for the fans who know what this series should be capable of. Thankfully Star Trek Wave 4 looks a lot more promising. Who knows? I may even end up enjoying writing about them. As for this wave, I'm glad to see the back of it. The shoes were shiny though.
