Star Trek Minimates - "Trouble With Tribbles" Kirk

The sole Star Trek Minimate exclusive was this Captain Kirk from the episode "The Trouble With Tribbles", offered as a figures.com exclusive in 2002.

Packaging

Two different types of packaging were used in the Star Trek Minimates line. Some figures were carded, and some came in the round plastic tube packaging. The "Trouble With Tribbles" Captain Kirk came only on a card, presumably as it was a lower-run exclusive.

Interestingly, the back of the card shows what might have been had the Star Trek range lasted more than a wave, check out the rest of the Enterprise bridge crew:

"Trouble With Tribbles" Kirk

In ToyFare #103, Adam Unger at Art Asylum laments some of the character likenesses on Minimates like Kirk and Aragorn in the Lord of the Rings set, saying it's hard to get a decent likeness. Don't want to upset one of the main players at Art Asylum, but he's wrong. I absolutely love the cheeky "raised eyebrow" expression on this Minimate. It's adorable, and draws you in immediately. The hairpiece is identical to the original figure, but as that was a good hairpiece, it's not an issue for it to be reused here.

Like the first Kirk figure, "Trouble With Tribbles" Kirk doesn't have much detailing on him, but he is quite different to the first one. The biggest change is that in this episode he wears a green tunic which is much less standard than the usual Starfleet uniform. It's a good look, though, keeping the usual simple style and detailing.

The big draw for this set - aside from simply getting more of the Shat - is the inclusion of the Tribbles. These have been done exceptionally well, being a series of fluffballs all held togther by a string, so as not to lose them all individually. It's a really nice accessory, one of the best ever in the entire Minimates range, as it's such a simple yet well-executed idea.

Overall, this exclusive, with it's fantastic facial detailing and superb accessory, is well worth tracking down even if you have the first yellow-shirted Captain Kirk.

MMC Score - 8 out of 10
