News

20th December 2005
It's been very slow for news recently - a symptom of a Minimates malaise? Hope not. Anyway, as if to dispel such thoughts, DST have been pimping their Street Fighter Minimates line. Check out the article on TNI about Street Fighter wave 2 here, and see the nice hi-res pic of the whole lot of 'em.

4th December 2005

On some of the later pages of that thread, there are some more interesting links to a trailer, and poster, thanks to slipperyduckie and minijeff. Also thanks to Freddy Freeman for originally sending this news in to Minimates Central. Remember, if you see something newsworthy, please let me know using the email address on the main page. You may get your name up in lights :)

Figures.com has come up trumps again with more pictures of Minimates items from the Autumn Toy Fair. This time, it's the upcoming 3rd wave of Lord of the Rings figures and packaging. Check them out here. Thanks to AdyCarter on the Art Asylum board for posting about this.

25th October 2005
The Autumn Toy Fair has started, and along with it some much needed Minimate news. First off, the initial lineups for the Battlestar Galactica Minimates have been announced, check out this figures.com article here. Looks like the main characters from both incarnations are covered, but the repacks worry me. Thanks to twistedfate79 for posting this on the Art Asylum forum.

Figures.com also have some more pictures up of the Street Fighter Minimates, including a mock up of the packaging, which you can find here. Thanks to Amazing.JL for posting that, again on the Art Asylum board.

Thank you!

Lots of great news to report today, as it was Preview night at the San Diego Comic Convention last night and already pics of the latest Minimates items are showing up! First off, we have pictures of the Street Fighter Minimates. Check out the pics from Toy News International here and see what kind of buzz they are getting on the discussion thread on the Art Asylum forum here. Looks like this could be a really strong line!

There are also promotional pictures available of the long awaited Lord of the Rings wave 3 Minimates. Take a look here courtesy of LordOfTheRingsGuide.com. This wave looks great, especially Eowyn and the Witch King.

11th July 2005
With the San Diego Comic Convention looming, Diamond Select Toys have announced that they will debut the new Street Fighter Minimate line at SDCC. Thanks to Toy News International for reporting that here. Also check out the discussion thread on the Art Asylum forum (started by me for once) here.

Check out the first shots of Marvel Minimates wave 10 courtesy of hedgehog here. Looks like they come with a cool poster now!

5th July 2005
Looks like wave 10 of the Marvel Minimates might well be released this week, at least on the West Coast. Keep you eyes peeled! Thanks to Storm 1:08 for posting the news on the Art Asylum forum here.

21st June 2005
The colour of the blank Minimate exclusive for the San Diego Comic Convention this summer has been revealed by DST in their monthly E-Spectrum email newsletter. It's going to be... red. This is a bit underwhelming after the recent Wizard World Philadelphia exclusive which was also red.

AFX have a page up now for preorders of their upcoming summer exclusive Thanos/Silver Surfer set. Looks like they weren't able to chrome the Silver Surfer, who somewhat needlessly gets a 4th release. Regardless, Thanos is a figure a lot of people are waiting for since his announcement in wave 7 and subsequent cancellation. Check out the AFX order page here. Thanks to Metal Sonic for posting this on the Art Asylum board.

14th June 2005
The C3 Mini-Flyers have finally hit Target stores, for the low low price of $4.99. Buy 'em if you see 'em and help ensure C3 continues to grace our shelves. Thanks to Jaster on the AA boards for the sighting news.

In more C3 retailer action, it appears that there will be a Batman C3 promotion from the 15th June at UK Toys R Us's. Spend over £15 on C3 stuff and get a Mini Flyer free. Can't be bad! See the full news item on Action-Figure.com here.

5th June 2005
This weekend sees Wizard World Philly in full swing. Check out some nice shots of the DST display of Marvel waves 10 & 11 courtesy of Action-Figure.com here.

Also at the DST booth were large posters of Street Fighter Minimates artwork. Check out the pics at Toy News International here. Looking GOOD!

31st May 2005
In yet more Minimates summer convention exclusive news, we finally find out what happened to Thanos... He's an AFX exclusive at SDCC! See the AFX pre-order page here and check out fball13z's discussion thread on the AA boards here.

25th May 2005
The Minimates summer convention exclusives continue to multiply... Just announced by Art Asylum here is a new Fantastic Four boxset of Marvel's first family of superheroes. Look for this set at San Diego Comic Con and Wizard World Chicago. Check out the discussion thread on the AA boards here.

20th May 2005
It's a news roundup chock full of release information... First off, the C3 Mini-Flyers are now available at UK TRU stores, priced at a very reasonable £4.99 each. Considering the 6-month lag from C3's release in the States to the UK getting it at the start of this year, it's great that the Mini-Flyers are out so soon after their release overseas.

Also on a C3 tip, check out this $9.98 Batcave from Amazon US! Thanks to Tad Ghostal for posting up the link on the Art Asylum boards.

Finally, Tower Records now have the IndyMates set in for a superb $10.19, a very good price. Check it out here! Thanks to Just Call Me Luke on the Art Asylum boards for that.

16th May 2005
The C3 Mini-Flyers are now available from those UK comic shops who use a Diamond UK account! Thanks to Rad for posting this on the Minimates Central forum here.

13th May 2005
The Wizard World Chicago exclusive blank Minimate... will be white. A bit of a letdown, to be honest, after two very recent white blanks in the Toyfair blank and the Free Comic Book Day blank. Check out the Wizard World Chicago page for a picture here. Thanks to Jose Lagos for posting the information on the AA board.

12th May 2005
AFX now have pre-order information and pics of their Lord of the Rings Elrond Minimate exclusive. Check their page out here for more info. Thanks to Storm 1:08 for posting the information on the AA board.

Also, it looks like Tower are continuing their Minimates run of stock as they now have in the former AFX-exclusive Magneto and Professor X set as you can see here. Thanks to Jose Lagos for that snippet.

11th May 2005
The IndyMates box set was released this week (Wednesday), with both AFX and West Coast comic shops getting it in. East Coasters look for it next week. Check out the thread started by Storm 1:08 on the Art Asylum board here for more info.

Diamond Select Toys have updated their website with a comprehensive list of all available and soon to be released Marvel Minimates. A nice visual guide, it's well worth having a look at their page here. Thanks to JattaPake for posting about it on the Art Asylum boards here.

Finally, you will notice that the Minimates Central logos have now been updated with Lawngnome's winning entries. Only two of the ones done so far have taglines, so come across to the Minimates Central Forum and make a suggestion.

4th May 2005
Finally the destination of the Dark Phoenix/Cyclops pack is revealed - it'll be available as the DST exclusive set for San Diego Comic Con and Wizard World Chicago, as announced by Diamond Select Toys on their website here. Thanks to Jose Lagos for emailing me with this info, and also to dockingbay97 for posting about it on the Art Asylum boards here.

In other exclusive-related news, it appears the formerly AFX-exclusive Marvel sets Professor X/Magneto and Classic Iron Man/Silver Centurion Iron Man are listed in the July edition of Previews, and therefore available for comic shops to order. Thanks to Tad Ghostal for giving everyone a heads up on the Art Asylum boards here.

In site-related news, the winner of the "Design a Minimates Central logo" competition has been announced. Head on over to the announcement thread on the Minimates Central Forum to see who won.

3rd May 2005
Tower Records appear to have got more chase Minimates in; as well as the Maskless Doom previously reported, they now have the Black Spidey chase in stock. Check it out here. Thanks to Just Call Me Luke on the Art Asylum boards for spotting this.

1st May 2005
Michael's Review of the Week concerns the C3 Mini-Flyers, check out the review along with some superb pics of the Minimates themselves here.

30th April 2005
The latest DST Q&A thread has been posted on the Art Asylum boards, see the latest answers to your burning Marvel questions here.

Many thanks to the Sporq, who emailed me to let everyone know that whilst Tower Records are still selling the Stealth Batwing for a bargain $12.99 (check it out here), they are also offering the year-old Marvel wave 5 chase, Maskless Dr Doom. Check it out here if you missed this particular great figure.

29th April 2005
The next Wizard World blank will be red! Check out Wizard's page for Wizard World Philadelphia here. Thanks to Bonfire on the Art Asylum boards for posting the info here.

The Minimates Central Design a Logo competition has now finished and the winner is currently being chosen.

18th April 2005
Some interesting snippets of information have surfaced in the last few days. First, hedgehog has posted pics up of all 6 of the C3 Mini-Flyers and their Minimates on the Art Asylum boards - check them out here.

Volume 3 of DST's Q&A thread has been posted up here. No Earth-shattering announcements, but it's good to see solid (and regular) communication with the fans.

Adam from Art Asylum has also revealed more about the next Lord of the Rings Minimates. He says that the next AFX exclusive will be Elrond (possibly in his Prologue outfit, as there has been concept art of that shown before). Also Eowyn in Armour is confirmed, as is Strider. Previous information stated that the next wave of 4 2-packs will also include Ringwraith, Witchking, Lurtz, Hobbit Smeagol and Bilbo, so if Elrond is a single-pack figure then that's 7 out of 8 accounted for.

The Minimates Central Design a Logo competion will run until the 27th April. The winner will receive either a WWLA exclusive blank or a Dave School exclusive Batman so don't forget to submit your designs for a logo here.

12th April 2005
The long-delayed C3 Mini-Flyers appear to be hitting AFX very shortly, with the AFX order page listing them as "shipping in 5-7 business days". Thanks to Famous on the AA board for posting this, see his thread here. Be interesting to see if anyone's comic shops get these in this week or next.

On the Minimates Central Forum, a thread is showcasing designs submitted by readers for the new Minimates Central logo, check them out here. The winning design will get a special prize and will be used on the site, so don't be shy, design me a logo!

5th April 2005
In a post on the Art Asylum board, Adam from Art Asylum has addressed the matter of retailer support for the proposed C3 Batman Begins sets - and it's not good news...

"sadly, none of the begins stuff will make it to the shelf for the movie. without mass support pa could not go up on this line unfortunately. if the movie is a monster hit, then we can come back and hopefully try again, for the dvd release perhaps, but at this point, it's on hold. hurts me as much as it hurts you.....well, more actually! adam".

It's a real shame, as the sets looked very good. I have linked them before in a previous news article, but check out the pictures here (scroll down about halfway).

2nd April 2005
As you can see, Minimates Central has undergone its first major overhaul since it started 18 months ago. It has a new look, with a menu frame designed to help navigate around the site easier. Some sections have been tidied up, and there are several new additions. There is now a review section dedicated to promotional Minimate reviews, where the likes of Santa Spidey and the Toy Fair 2005 blank now reside. Look for the green Wizard World LA blank to feature in this new section soon! There is also a section now specifically for articles, the most recent of which is the Dave School interview. Finally, I have set up a forum, hope to see you there. As always, if anything's now broken on the site, please let me know!

In other news, the "Ask DST" question and answer thread has been updated with volume 2's answers. Some very interesting stuff regarding the Maxi-Mate statues and their articulation, as it has been confirmed they really are just statues. A pity. Check out the full thread here for more.

29th March 2005
A bit of a news roundup of the last few days today, beginning with more pics from Toyfair of the Indymates boxset and the newly-released Batcopter courtesy of action-figure.com. The Indymates set also now has a preorder page set up on AFX, check that out here. Thanks to Shanester for that info.

The proposed lineup for the LOTR wave 3 Minimates is once again tantalisingly hinted at in this figures.com article here.

The UK C3 push continues with the first sightings of the Chemical Warehouse - thanks to AdyCarter for that news. Also the Batman C3 commercial has been seen on British TV. Thanks to Ady for posting this info on the AA forum and Gregory, who emailed me with the news.

Finally, it was revealed in the DST Radicals email newsletter that the recently-announced Street Fighter Minimates wave 1 lineup will include Ryu, Akuma, Chun-Li, M Bison and a Darkstalkers 2-pack of Morrigan and Demitri.

23rd March 2005
Pics of a Silver Spider-Man contest Minimate have been added to this thread by a lucky poster called bignothing, well worth checking out!

Also, the problems with the stills not displaying on the Dave School exclusive interview on Internet Explorer should now be fixed.

22nd March 2005
Minimates Central is proud to present an exclusive interview with Jeff from the DAVE School, who worked on the Batman: New Times project. Check out the interview here.

In other site news, over the last couple of days the site has moved hosting company to someone who can provide more bandwidth each month than my previous host. Hopefully the move has been completely transparent but please let me know if you find any pages that don't work or images that haven't moved across.

20th March 2005
Some great stuff to report on today. First, this weekend saw the start of the convention season with Wizard World Los Angeles, and as reported previously, it had been announced that there would be exclusive Wizard World Minimates available. Check out this thread on the Art Asylum Forum for some nice pics of the promotional exclusive. Thanks to ThatBlokeTimbo and JattaPake for the pics.

More pictures of Art Asylum's display from Toy Fair have been shown on the Action Figure Times website. Check out the article here (about halfway down the page) to see some fantastic never-before-seen C3 sets from the Batman Begins line and The Batman line which look absolutely amazing. Thanks to bluesparrow on the AA board for that - check out his discussion thread here.

Finally, thanks to Brandon on the AA LOTR board for dropping a serious hint about wave 3 of the LOTR Minimates line. Put it this way - you could army-build nine of them! Check out the thread here.

16th March 2005
Pictures of Art Asylum's display from Toy Fair have been shown, and in one of them you can see prototypes of the newly announced Minimate statues! Check it out here and see all the display pics here. Thanks to Brandon on the AA board for the pictures and to the eagle eyes of ThatBlokeTimbo for spotting the prototypes.

14th March 2005
Diamond Select Toys have made some Minimate-specific updates to their website. First off, check out the promo for Marvel waves 10 & 11 here. Thanks to Brandon on the AA board for pointing that out. Also in their news page, DST have released a picture of Silver Spider-Man which you can see here. Looks like there will only be 3 available at Wizard World LA. If that holds for each convention, that would put the total number of Silver Spidey's at 15, far lower than Gold Spidey. Thanks to Jose Lagos for that link.

12th March 2005
Diamond Select Toys have held a "Question and Answer" session on the Art Asylum board, as seen here. Topics include the non-appearance of the Dark Phoenix.Cyclops set, mixing Thanos back into a future wave, and the possibility of a Thor Minimate.

8th March 2005
Art Asylum are gearing up for the summer convention season early, as seen in this announcement on the Art Asylum forum, and also communicated to Diamond Select Toys Radicals members via email. Also thanks go to Jose Lagos for sending me the actual email with picture of the Wizard World Minimate.

Minimate Extravaganza Begins in LA

The 2005 Summer Show Tour begins March 18th in Los Angeles and Diamond Select Toys is ready to blow fans away. Building on the success of 2003's Gold Spider-Man Minimate promotion, be sure to stop by the DST booth and pick up your free Wizard World Minimate at 12:00 each day! Each Wizard show will feature a uniquely colored Minimate, plus the chance to win an extremely limited Silver Spider-Man Minimate. As if that wasn't enough, the fan-chosen exclusive Marvel Select She-Hulk figure will be available exclusively at all five Wizard shows this year.

Radicals should also be on the lookout for a promotional scratch-off ticket which can be redeemed for a discount and a prize at each show. Tickets will be mailed to Radicals members in the surrounding area before each show so make sure your address information is correct by logging into www.diamondselecttoys.com and checking your Radicals Preferences.

In other news, it appears the C3 Batcave has been spotted in Big W stores in the UK, priced at £39.99. Thanks to Hob for that!

6th March 2005
Batman: New Times, the Art-Asylum endorsed animated project by the Dave School of animation is now up on their website. Head to http://www.daveschool.com/BATMAN/index.html and take a look at this awesome short film. It's 6 minutes long and you will need Quicktime to view it.

5th March 2005
Online toy retailer Action Figure Express has pre-orders and pictures up of the upcoming Marvel waves 10 and 11, who say they have a July ship date. Check out the wave 10 order page and a larger group picture, and also the wave 11 order page and larger group picture. The pictures still appear to be of the prototypes. Thanks to Jose Lagos for emailing me about this.

1st March 2005
Lots of news to round up today. First off, Millionaire Playboy has some coverage up from Toy Fair, including shots of the Art Asylum tour here and also a good picture of the Toy Fair '05 exclusive Minimate here.

In other Minimate exclusive news, the Dave School's animated Minimate project Batman: New Times was premiered at Art Asylum's Toy Fair event, and there was a Mega-Con exclusive Batman Minimate Figure offered only this past weekend at the debut of the "fan-film". The figure appears to be the Mini-Batmobile Batman, with a possible different paint scheme, the posable cape and batarang gun, in a Dave School baggie. Thanks to Jose Lagos for sending me the information.

In more UK news, Michael Swain has kindly emailed me to say that Woolworths now has C3 in stock. It appears to be the same 4 sets as Index (both Batmobiles, Batwing, and Batglider), but it is encouraging to know because Woolworths are one of the biggest toy sellers in the UK and it will really put C3 on the map. I'd just wish they would have added in the "playset" sets (Chemical Warehouse/Throne Room) as well as the vehicles to add to the variety.

Finally, if this site was inaccessible at all yesterday, it was due to my bandwidth being exceeded for the month. Hopefully this means that the extra features I have incorporated into the site, such as the customs section, as well as the reviews of wave 8 (wave 9 to start very shortly!) have made Minimates Central a better place for all your Minimate needs. Thanks to all of you who visited for making February my biggest month yet.

22nd February 2005
Altered States Mag have some very interesting pictures from the Toyfair Art Asylum office tour, including concept art and new individual pics of the newly announced waves 10 and 11. Check out the fantastic gallery here. Thanks to "D" from ASM for the links.

20th February 2005
Some more news has surfaced from the US Toyfair. TNI are reporting that there will be 8" Galactus and Sentinel Minimate statues to be released this year. Sounds like an interesting idea to beat current licensing restrictions! Check out their article here, which also sheds a bit more light on the Street Fighter Minimates wave 1 lineup.

TNI also have a couple of shots of the IndyMates 4-figure box-set which you can see here, and finally a gallery similar to SuperHeroTimes.com which shows off Marvel waves 10 and 11 here.

18th February 2005
And so it begins... This weekend sees the start of the US ToyFair, in which all the companies show off their product lines for the next year. Expect a lot of updates to the news page as news comes in, but for now, check out these new pictures of the C3 MiniFlyers from Action-Figure.com here.

In other (extremely cool) news, it has been confirmed that Art Asylum will once again team up with Diamond Select Toys to create merchandise based on the Star Trek licence. What this means for Minimate fans is that there will be new 2" Star Trek Minimates! Check out the announcement via Toy News International here.

UPDATE:

There are going to be 2" Street Fighter Minimates!!! Check out the press release courtesy of Figures.com here!

Figures.com also has a gallery of Napster products, which Art Asylum have licenced. Check out the gallery here. Of particular interest to the Minimate collectors is this Napster Kitty Minimate here. Blimey!

EVEN BIGGER UPDATE:

Marvel Minimates waves 10 and 11 are being shown at ToyFair. They are essentially an X-Men wave and a Spider-Man wave featuring many much-requested figures like Rogue, Cable, Mystique, Black Cat and Iceman. Check out the gallery of pics from superherotimes.com here. To my mind, these are both very strong waves and are definitely giving people some fan-favourites.

10th February 2005
Michael's Review of the Week has the C3 Mini-Javelin up as the latest review, check it out here.

NeoLego from the Art Asylum board now has a review thread up of the wave 2 C3 Minimates, with lots of cool pics and links to galleries. Check it out here.

8th February 2005
NeoLego on the Art Asylum forum has some pics up from the new C3 sets. Check out pictures of Street Justice Batman, Manbat, Martian Manhunter, and Flash here and pictures of Tactical Batman here.

In Minimates Central site news, yet another new section has opened - check out the Star Trek reviews page!

3rd February 2005
Some comic book shops got an unexpected delivery of new C3 sets on Wednesday. The new sets out are the Batcycle, Mini-Javelin and the Batcopter. Kirby, who had originally posted on the Art Asylum C3 board that his comic book shop had C3 listed for this week, has now supplied pictures which you can see here.

Xybot has now added scans from the Previews magazine of the Free Comic Book Day Minimates, check them out here.

The new Index catalogue has first sightings of C3 in the UK - Thanks to Mr Excitable for that!

Finally, Shanester on the Art Asylum board posted up an interesting image of a variant card from the Santa Spidey giveaways to retailers, which is very different to the one I got (which can be seen in my review). Check out the picture in his post here.

28th January 2005
As part of my drive for adding new content to the site, the Minimates Central Gallery page has been revamped and split into 3; the Pic-Fics page, the Customs page and the new Promotional artwork page. Look for featured customs to be added very shortly, along with some more new sections!

27th January 2005
TNI have some nice shots of Marvel Minimates wave 8 in their TNI Spotlight feature, check them out here.

26th January 2005
The latest issue of Previews magazine has a very interesting piece of information. Apparently to help promote Free Comic Book Day on May 7th, special FCBD Minimates will be available. Thanks to Xybot on the Art Asylum forum for posting this, check out his thread here.

Lots of news to round up today, and it's all good! For starters, Dockingbay97 has taken some great shots of Marvel wave 9, check out the pics here.

Thanks to Bluesparrow on the Art Asylum boards, who has found some interesting new information on the upcoming Indymates box set. One of the 4 Minimates in the set will be Kabuki, and the creator of Kabuki has some pics and info regarding the set, including an estimated ship date of February. Check out David Mack's Kabuki Minimate page here, and Bluesparrow's original thread about it here.

The future of Art Asylum's C3 line has been the focus for some intense speculation in recent weeks, but there is some positive news trickling out now. First off, Jay at Toy News International has an article regarding the re-solicitation of the C3 Mini-Flyers, which you can read here, whilst back on the Art Asylum board, the Asylum Showcase has pictures of the projected display for next month's Toy Fair. See the showcase here and check out the discussion thread about it here.

Finally, one of the best review sites on the internet, Michael's Review of the Week, has a review up of wave 2 of the Lord of the Rings Minimates. Check it out (and the lovely quality pictures) here.

It looks as though Wave 8 of the Marvel Minimates could be reaching comic shops this Wednesday. This would be a major turn-up for DST to ship something earlier than expected, so keep your eyes open. Thanks to Kirby on the Art Asylum board for posting this information.
